Have at least a software firewall, hardware and software is better. Maintain up-to-date antivirus software. Do not directly access the internet (or allow the internet to directly access you) with any Microsoft application; this includes any version of IE, Outlook, Outlook Express, IIS, and SQL Server. And do not open any attachments without verifying with the sender that they sent them. If broadband ISPs required all or any subset of this, the internet would be better off.
