RE: Problem with IE and other browsers
It seems to me the diffence between open source and proprietary such as Microsoft is nothing more than a matter of semantics. When you say they impose certain non-standards, I think of it as features I want with my system in many cases. To me standards are fine to an extent, but if everyone follows the standards, all of the time, how will that lead to any new innovation? In my mind the irony is that open source is so ultra compatible, that it's not really open anymore. If any company is going to get berated or fall out of favor for building their own systems with it, what's the point? It's almost like standards along with open source are trying to create their own laws. If they were to surpass Microsoft there is no indication that any other OS than *nix would be welcome and no other usage than to keep it open and follow the standards. To me that creates one big OS for the whole world. Isn't that what the OS people are supposed to be fighting hard against? Or, is it the more evil purpose of sinking Microsoft and then taking over the computing world? I just don't get it. If Open Source is the "good guys" then why not leave Microsoft to their own way of doing things and worry about what you want to do. They don't stand in my way if I want to build something on antoher OS. I don't see the problem. One person's predatory or monopoly take is another person's view that the company grew from small roots and is hugely popular among the discerning public. To say any less is to imply the majority of computer users have no ability to understand what they are buying. I don't for a minute sell the people of the world that short. I think that is bunk. There were choice when Microsoft was small, but Unix nor Apple seemed to want or be able to go mainstream. So Microsoft did, it's as simple as that. Their has never been a situation like this in history to compare it to, so to cry monopoly is not really being fully honest imho. The other monopolies in our history were much different situations and economic models. I'm not sure why someone didn't speak up or try to compete when MS started to grow? Why didn't any other company? What is the reason for that? When MS was not yet huge, but the writing was on the wall? Nobody stepped up. But NOW everyone is stepping up and trying to gain marketshare from Microsoft by crying foul. How in the world is that right?
AT&T, who invented Unix doesn't get heat from users about being a monopoly. A wicked evil company that owned every telephone line into every home in the 60s and 70s. But the OS they created, no matter which division it was, had the monetary backing of a true mammoth monopoly from the START, not on their own..not from earning it over many years of hard work. They got it from the monopoly money and the more modern berkely et. al. versions built for DoD was heavily funded by taxpayer dollars from the Federal Government. Modern day Unix/Linux never was a company that earned it's way. It was taxpayer funded to build their OS and now Linux has the full benefit of that and continued Federal spending on programs that use Unix and Linux.
So what exactly did Microsoft do that bothers people? At the very least, unlike *nix, they made earned it. Doesn't matter if they bought technology or jobbed it out. It was their vision as a company and it took years of hard work. Design is always more work than construction, hence why it fetches so much more money and requires so much more talent. They built that company the good old fashioned American way and anyone that doesn't respect that should look at the roots of the OS they favor and see where it came from.
