17 years?
If you've really been using a Mac for 17 years then you must remember the days in the late 80's/early 90's when the Mac had 12+% market share. Funny thing was, back then people were writing viruses for the Mac. Boot sector viruses mainly since sneakernet was the primary way to transfer files then, but amazingly when Mac dropped to 8, 5 and now 2-3% nobody bothers writing viruses anymore.

Many Mac users seem to think this is a good thing. In my mind, it's just an indication that the bad guys don't bother with such small markets. Then again, many software vendors don't either. That's not to say there isn't a lot of great Mac software out there, just nowhere near as much as Windows. And now that Jobs has required all the ISV's to rewrite their software for the third time*, I suspect you're going to see even more packages drop off the map.

*1st time, transition from 68k CPU to PPC
2nd time, transition from OS9 to OS X
3rd time, transition from PPC to x86
