The crooks on the Internet have become very adept at mimicking some websites, such as eBay and PayPal. Although some are blatantly fakes (the bad English gives them away), some are excellently done and might easily fool the average person into clicking on a link and give away their personal information.
Thanks to WhoIs, I can check the properties of any suspicious email and know instantly that it did not come from the legitimate source. I have forwarded many such emails, including the headers and WhoIs info, to the appropriate website to aid them in tracking down the identify thieves.
This is probably the one case where I agree that access to WhoIs is appropriate, given the huge amount of internet crime going on.
