I have used whois for ages for ecommerce ...
Before I buy anything over the internet, I check the whois database. If the data is incomplete or hidden, I don't buy. If the data indicates a very recent registration I don't buy. If the data is not verifiable, I don't buy. Its that simple and it has saved me untold problems. I sell via ecommerce myself and in the process I maintain an accurate whois referrence. I invite any prospective customer to check me out, and I expect to be able to do the same with prospective vendors.
