The majority is the problem ....
... not the minority like yourself.

"If I am so vulnerable running ms-office, why don't any of you try to take over my system???"

Because the chances are, that unlike most PC users, you have actually taken steps to secure your system and that it is not running in "straight out of the box" mode IYKWIM.

In spite of that it is a simple fact that if you visit the "wrong" type type of website with internet explorer then you stand a much higher chance of getting infected than if you used any other browser.

A friend of mine never visits "dodgy" sites and only opens email from people he knows. He received a Word document the other day from a friend who had been infected and this afternoon I am going round there to help him uninfect his PC - if that is even possible. His machine has ground to halt under the weight of the trojans and associated cr*p.

Direct assault is not the issue. What the problem is that these security holes leave you vulnerable. Microsoft's products are in the position of being like a bank who can't lock the safe to secure the money, but they say it doesn't matter because no crooks can in through the door. Yeah right! When one crook does get in, he's got free run of the bank (or in this case, the PC).

"Come on guys, real work requires real tools, not so called open source software that you can't really get anything done with."

We run our entire business very successfully using open source tools. Furthermore if you think that opensource is useless then this site that you're posting in is run on a Resin open source webserver and then there is the famous Apache running 70% of all webservers.

"The Gimp" is a successful open source cross platform image tool. MySQL and Postgre are far more common than SQL server. Since you are into VB then Eclipse and Netbeans are open source development tools and work very, very well. Cross platform too which VB is not.

I'm not going run off a hige list. "Real Apps" can be written using any tool. What "real apps" need are talented programmers. Tools are only tools after all....
