Simple Utility Shoots the Messenger
There's a simple free utility that will let you turn Windows Messenger on and off at will. It's called "Shootthemessenger" and is available free at http://grc.com/stm/ShootTheMessenger.htm
Just download and run the executable file (there's nothing to install) and you will be told if Windows Messenger is running. If it is, you can disable it with one click of the mouse. Problem solved for now.
