FWIW, if you use IE, it does warn you before opening Excel files
After the user clicks a link to an Excel file, IE displays an additional warning before opening the file. And on my machine, the default button on the warning dialog box is the "Cancel" button.

So not only would the attacker need to convince the user to navigate to an Excel file, the user would have to explicitly agree to open the file. The bug is still nasty and ought to be fixed, but there is definitely significant user interaction that must take place for this to be exploited.
