The MS Security Conundrum in a nutshell
This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Here's the dirty little secret to MS security: 3rd party developers BUILD upon it, and even RELY on it when creating apps.

I've experienced this first-hand in locking down a public web site using Win2K. We applied an extensive collection of security checklists against the OS in an effort to shore it up for public exposure. The problem? None of the ISV (Hello, IBM and CA) products we used on the platform worked on a hardened Win OS! Services that are viewed as security risks were deemed essential to the function of various apps, full-open directory rights were needed, etc. Calls to ISVs' tech support centers were frightening. You were told one of 2 things: a)"We only support our product on a default install of Windows", or b)"We have no idea what rights or services are required to run our product, just turn them all on".

We got everthing working, but it was despite the support calls, not because of them.

So here's yet another example of this within the ZDNet story. It's bad enough that MS puts the OS out there wide open, but there's a long line of guilty parties who dog pile on top of that sloppiness and never get the finger pointed at them.

Glad to see the complicit parties are being outed.
