A couple of things:
First, and clearly, the best security defense for using a computer to check e-mail and browse the Internet is a user. Firewall will not do any help to stop the phishing scams. It's users' responsibility to judge themselves before they do anything in their computer, like opening attachments, visiting evasive websites that install spyware, etc. Almost every Windows users (and sometimes would-be Linux/Mac users) fall into a trap of being unresponsible and not using their common sense (except me, since I'm Internet-Savvy and still use Windows).

Second, not only a hardware router, but also have a software firewall in every computer that you have. Hardware router (and bear in mind about Windows XP Service Pack 2 Firewall) doesn't monitor outgoing packets to the Internet.

Last, but not least, it doesn't matter which OS you're using! If you think it's for Windows, don't be so sure! Cybercrooks are getting smarter, smarter, and smarter on trying to get everyone to give up on their personal information. So if there will be would-be Mac/Linux users who switch from Windows and took their habits on surfing the Internet and carelessly open their attachments, you might expect to see criminals target those OSes.

Please read my above paragraphs carefully, one more time. I really don't want you to be jumping into a conclusion pretty quick.
