A good thing and a bad thing
Information is the key to solving and preventing crimes. So, yes, law enforcement needs access to IP communications.

The bad is that these backdoors will exist for anyone to try to exploit, from foreign govts to organized crime to teenagers with nothing better to do.

And there is a reason that the FBI needed to ask for expanded wiretap powers, because in the 1970's they were taken away because those powers were being abused for political and other non-criminal investigations. It was just too easy to get a wiretap.

History has shown that anytime a govt is given more power, it is eventually abused.

How do we know the FBI isn't going to just turn on all the backdoors and start mining data on everyone?
