So in other words, pay for it, then don't use it
Microsoft would love to endorse your suggestion. Buy a Windows license, pay for a mail client... and then be branded "stupid" because you foolishly expected to be able to use it to send and receive mail. Users of other OS's don't have to worry about opening attachments, only Windows users. Perhaps a Windows fan can point me to the section in Microsoft's Outlook documentation where it says "Thank you for paying us for Outlook. Please note that to attempt to use Outlook to read emails is foolish and stupid. An email might SAY it's from your beloved son, but you should delete it anyway, in case it's malware. And don't open any attachments- you'll probably get infected with Windows malware. Only stupid people pay us for email then expect to be able to use it. Hey, we're Microsoft, innovators of the non-functional application software suite!".

When a letter comes through your door, do you automatically bin it if you don't know who sent it? If not, why not? Could it be that postal mail works as advertised? Could it be that email on any OS other than windows, simply works as advertised, with no caveats? Yes! Windows is the only OS which allows an email message or an attachment to run code on "your" PC without you knowing or being asked.

PS - I'm still chuckling at NZ's retort, in another thread on broken Windows, that he wrote a Linux shell script which parsed all email attachments and tried to run them as a script. This single instance of a user-written script was somehow meant to illustrate that Linux is "broken" too. Laugh or what? Only Windows automatically runs code without asking. Only Windows provides a pipe straight to the underlaying OS through applications embedded in it.

There is no reason why people who have paid for an email client should be expected to know they should not, and can not use it wiothout malware problems. Broken Windows indeed!
