Cheaper to give it away

From everything I've read, it's better for companies offering this
service to give it away for free, rather than charge for it. To give
it away, basically all you need to do is set up a wireless network,
pretty trivial nowadays (at least from my experiences with
Apple's Airport system). To sell it to customers, you need to set
up a sales system and a password system that allows only those
who have paid to get in. That takes more software, and it takes
someone to manage the system. That gets expensive, and
usually the expense is higher than the amount you can charge
for the service.

So for some businesses, it is a good idea to offer this to get the
customer into the store, and staying there and buying more. But
it does not appear to be a good business on its own.
