Well, then this article was quite timely
if at work, did you* newly join a domain. If not done correctly, you're domain account may be limited to restricted user vs power or administrator and Windows isn't getting deep enough to read the area where it authenticates your key.

if at home, not sure, . . still could be a lockout due to overly strict permissions via either account type or permissions set directly on folder(s). Besides Window's updates, did any other grand changes occur to your system is something to discern for your research.

But then, MS WOULDN'T be unhappy with any OEM pre-installing Windows because they'd be REALLY unhappy if they installed anything else. MS makes it money with the preinstall, it makes it money when consumers choose to buy it retail, MS makes no money when you buy Apple or download Linux and don't buy MS.

If you want to shame HP into helping, you could always tell them that you'll report them to the BSA for providing a "counterfeit" copy of Windows and that the problem may be found to be pervasive with their other paying customers.

You can find a not centralized area of Linux info and links to distros at Distrowatch http://distrowatch.com/ . You can just do a search for linux and whatever keywords to find more info in general about Linux since there is a wealth of forums, manuals, and organizations with online resources to share.
