Well....
Not to knock M$, I think they have a good product if you get it on a stable manufacturer like DELL or HP. But to answer, it's mostly a security issue where thought was not there when putting together the OS. For example, when OS/2 came out, it was truly multi-tasking. I could format a floppy, scan a drive, and do other things without any noticable slowup. Sure, it had it's problems, it was difficult to load, difficult to manage, and difficult to troubleshoot. However on the same token, so was any other OS to date. Back in the day of servers such as Novel (gee, I'm showing my age), say, 2.01. You needed to be an engineer to figure it out, was not for the faint of heart. But security was tighter back then, then now. When SQL came out with version 2000, the first issue was a total lack of security. Anyone with a bit of knowledge could gain access to the SQL box as an Administrator. Then there were memory leak issues which caused many companies to put it aside for the time being until a more stable OS could be created or at least fix the current SQL. Oracle also had issues with memory leaks and loss of tags with their database structures. But here, we are talking about M$, and not to be mean, but they are somewhat of a joke when it comes to security. If I were Bill Gates, I would streamline the computer industry to begin with. Most of these Tawianese boards really suck and aren't manufactured with any standards, and the components usually are poorly constructed. Also, if DELL, HP, and Gateway design products specific, MS shouldn't be giving them special versions of windows geared toward their specific platforms. For example, the version of windows on HP products conflicts with the updates such as SP1 and SP2. Matter of fact, they have special SP1 patches available from their website because they know it's not compatible. Also Dell has a few issues with some of the patches that are pushed by M$ which reek havoc on those systems. By having a standard, M$ wouldn't be so burden coming out with patches that patch other patches.
