I have never understood the delay...
I've heard people claim that the delay is because of the distance to and from the satelitte but that simply doesn't make sence. Unless someone changed the laws of physics when I wasn't looking, a radio signal travels at the speed of light (186K miles a second).

If I assume the satellite is 500 mile high in orbit (it's lower than that) the travel time one way is like .002 seconds. That certainly is not a long time and is not the reason for the slow speeds. Go figure...
