I think you need to catch up.
From a recent article.

Commissioners championed BPL technology, saying it could help drive down broadband prices by providing a third broadband choice for U.S. residents, beyond cable modem and DSL service. Because of the near ubiquity of power lines, BPL could also bring broadband services to rural areas that may not have other options, commissioners said.

"We could be making some history here this morning," said commissioner Michael Copps. "Just catching a glimpse of what this could mean in terms of the great broadband infrastructure challenge of the 21st century is exciting."

Companies such as Amperion Inc. and Current Technologies LLC are already planning to roll out limited BPL services by later this year, and they will be allowed to do so as long as they comply with current FCC rules on unlicensed RF emissions.

My power company is using Amperion hardware and is already installing it.

And yes, you are correct, I do believe wireless is a better solution with the recent approval of the 802.16a standard. It's 30 mile range, easy to upgrade at minimal cost, and the lack of "line maintenace" makes it more cost effective that any traditional wired solution. But hey, that's just my opinion...
