No, you missed the point....
The point I was making was strictly concerning our ability to judge, from our distant perspective, whether this particular individual was just feigning repentance of his crappy actions because he was caught, or if his repentance was infact valid.

What we have to be concerned about in a situation such as this is that a natural human psychological reaction to any lousy anti social behavior is to strive to make the perpetrator appear not just guilty, but guilty to such a degree that they appear to deserve the greatest wrath we would like to impose on them. The difficulty arises where we have a possible perception that the perpetrator has genuinely recanted and truly would never repeat their crime; we then run the risk that our harsh punishment may be being leveled on someone who no longer deserves it and that runs counter to what our instincts would like to do.

Over and over, every time someone repents about some terrible or lousy thing they have done, all you ever here is ?your only sorry you were caught, not that you did it? and while that may too often be true, it is most certainly a pointless objection where we have no evidence to that fact from a perspective as distant from the individual as we are in this case.

The fact remains that this person has actually gone over to the other side and is now fighting against the very crime he committed, so while I think his previous activity was wretched in the extreme; as a logical person I?m not about to discount his repentance and turnabout behavior without some kind of empirical facts to justify what I already know is simply nothing more then a psychological reaction on my part.

You had better stat considering that if we want the criminals to truly repent and stop their activities then we had better be ready to actually accept a few apologies, because if the criminal element comes to realize that even sincere apologies will not be accepted then you can expect for very few apologies of any kind to be coming through.
