Who owns who?
If your using an MS product (particularly XP), the HW may be yours, but that SW and any files produced using said SW belongs to MS and no one else. We'll let MS prove that for me when times get tough for them and they disable current AP activations and refuse to reactivate.
This is well within their underestimated power and well beyond the average user to stop.
