Objections
Hi, "welcome to hell".

You said

Others here have very clearly expressed their reasons for the objections. Do you not read anyone else's comments?

Frankly, no. I was responding to the article, and then to those responding to my response. (If I don't stay focused, I could spend many hours on the forum.) I was only responding to the concerns of "privacy advocates".

You also said:

As honest people, you and I would report a crime to the police.
An unscrupulous person prefers to use such information as blackmail, thereby controlling the person who has committed the crime.

This data is already being collected. Having laws for how long it is retained will have no impact on whether it's used for blackmail. They've already got the data, along with the authority they need to turn it over to the relevant authorities. It's just a matter of how long they keep it. They're not obligated to destroy it now. It's the company's data, not the user's. (The phone company works the same way.) Blackmail is illegal, so in that sense, I'm against it, but at the same time, it's hard to shed a tear over someone getting blackmailed for committing illegal acts (and being stupid enough to leave an electronic trail.)

I won't sit here and say that the data will never be used for blackmail. It certainly could be used that way. But these rule changes won't affect it. Anything that's possible is already happening.
