It's not about attachments, it's about scripts

Emails that you think were sent by friends -- which they were not, but by a virus the friend is infected with and they can have attachments that look "safe". One of the biggest virus outbreaks we had was from what appeared to be a plain text <ocument. It wasn't. It was an executable (exe) file that faked being a plain text <ocument. Malware writers know that we generally will not be fooled (with exceptions) by obvious weirdness in our mailbox. Their goal is to trick you into opening it by making the email look as legit as possible. That entails spreading by senders you are used to getting email from and by running scripts that run without having to open anything but the email. They don't even have to have attachments. In fact, the flaw that we are discussing isn't in attachments, it's about malicious Word scripts opening an email when Word is enabled as your editor.
