Could it be a lot simpler then that? Here's a guy with the SSN of vetrens (many old and ready to pass on or have already done so, or who have already achieved good credit ratings over time) and looking to make some cash. Take home the laptop and have someone "break in" and take it (after getting paid for it).

I would say that's a lot more likely then a stupid "staged ID theft for spying and let the patsy take the fall" conspirecy theory. What happens if the guy tries to talk? Will
he be "suicided"?
