Volunteerism
I really think its great that people are so willing to give their time away in order to code something like Linux or OpenOffice. Some companies even pay developers to code these projects, which is also awesome. But volunteerism isn't dependable in the long term.

Which is why it has very little to do with software libre. It's all about enlightened self-interest.

Example:

$EMPLOYER sells devices that have to be programmed to be useful. Our customers need compilers and other dev tools to do that. We provide them with a version of gcc tweaked to support our products. In order to serve our customers, we put a good bit of work into gcc and related tools -- which in turn is available (good old GPL!) for merging into the main project trees. In fact, it's to our benefit if it is since it saves us the trouble of redoing the patches as the main tree evolves.

Everybody wins.
