If they could eliminate piracy tomorrow, it would be the worst nightmare for Microsoft since there would be a massive switch to Linux in third world countries arround the world and result in the development of an ecosystem supporting Linux and open source applications, severely reducing the network effect.

Not necessarily. If they use storm trooper tactics, yes. If they simply remove other alternatives while locking down their software (think hardware keys), maybe not.

However, if they do manage to remove all alternatives to purchasing MS software at full price, you can expect "full price" to increase dramatically. That's basic economics.
