I can agree with that...
But who decides what the "popular" open source applications are? What downloads are installed? Not all distros have the same apps. If I install Redhat, what do I get? What about BSD?

I really think its great that people are so willing to give their time away in order to code something like Linux or OpenOffice. Some companies even pay developers to code these projects, which is also awesome. But volunteerism isn't dependable in the long term. MS pays millions of dollars to developers to show up everyday and code for hours on end in order to keep up with the changing market. Open source in a source of innovation (MS doesn't innovate) but as soon as the lab experiment catches on MS just pushes 200 million onto the next version of Windows and crushes any effort.

OpenOffice and Linux are great products, but no one can seriously argue that they are better than MS Windows or Office. Mac OS X is better, but that's not free either.

Can they be as good? Certainly, but it will take a huge effort from all the open source developers into a single set of products instead of competing with each other.
