At LSB they are working to get applications to be distribution and desktop
independent.

But, even then, that only applies to extra programs you want to install. Right now, if you install Ubuntu, it downloads, installs, and updates all of the popular open source applications perfectly. Heck, everything the average user needs is PRE-installed and automatically updated.

It would not be any harder to support Linux and OpenOffice than Windows and MS Office once an eco-system is in place.
