Linux is too fractured for a commodity industry
Linux is currently too fractured to be the mainstay of a commodity industry such as an OS. The one benefit people get from Windows is that it guarentees all the software will run on it. Now, Web 2.0 proponents will tell you that the OS is just a way to host a browser, which will do all the work. But browser-based products have a who host of issues, including the requirement that the user is ALWAYS tied to the internet, applications are tied to archaic HTML and Javascript that is difficult to code, maintain and debug, ad hardware becomes more expensive as you scale up (meaning its cheaper to give all your users PCs than it is to build a bigger server).

Imagine trying to code World of Warcraft or Maya 3D rendering software to run within the browser. Hey, it would run on Linux, sure, but at what speed and at what cost? No to mention you'll have to share your screen with about 30% coverage in advertisement.
