How do you know it was Linux?
Are you a student/staff member there? Nowhere in the article, or in the few other articles I've seen on the matter, does it say what OS is used. It could be Linux, Netware, BSD/Unix, or Windows. Considering one of the systems was supposed to be offline, It could even be an old OS/2 or NT system.

To be honest, it doesn't make a difference what OS the systems were running. The fact is they were not secured properly, and they were compromised. If it was Windows, it would have been compromised. If it was Solaris, it would have been compromised. If the network and servers were configured properly, we wouldn't be reading this right now. If Woody had gone to the Police, this would never have happened.
