"paid for" email could still be free...
If we make digital "postage stamps" for email then so long as they're re-usable then they just circulate around without costing anybody anything.

The only people who would have to stump up any kind of hard cash are those who send *much* more mail than they receive, ie. spammers.

The average user would probably never pay for a stamp in his entire life. I'm sure ISPs would offer free postage stamps as incentives and there are no end of legitimate advertisers who'd put $0.01 stamps on email to get adverts into your inbox - just look at how much they spend on mailing color catalogs to you.

Excess stamps could be donated to charity. The charities could sell them to the advertisers, and it would go around and around.
