Secondly, there's the concept of "test mails", in which spammers use special software to send out mails. If they get responses from these, the software marks these addresses as "special": these are the more expensive addresses which are active, the people actually read the mail, and there are no spam filters. You don't have to be a genius to figure out what that will lead to!

What hurts the most (from the original story), is that guys like these get so much press coverage. This makes more and more people to sign up with them, leading to more junk internet traffic. Even if you ignore the loss in terms of bandwidth, think of the loss in terms of effort: people writing mails, and other, innocent people recieving and reading these mails (and possibly replying to them!).
