Silence is Golden
Have you ever heard that saying? What that means to me is that by not answering the question they are condemning themselves to persecution by the public because it is going to be assumed that they are up to the worst.
Another way to put that would be to say you say a lot when you say nothing at all. The implications of guilt are there. The implication that the records were handed over with little to no prompting is there. It smells fishy all around.
