I do not think "conflict of interest" applies to businesses in general (sounds like some legal garbage, misapplied) . So I think you missed the right phrase there.

Having too much (like your hypothetical example*) "stifles innovation" thus cuts down any 3rd party products, solutions, etc., to enhance marketability of an origonal product.

Now it would be a slap in the face to consumers for MS* to sell AntiVirus software, and they more than likely would burn for that, but legalities aside there isn't anything against it.

Needless to say it is a balance act not to shoot oneself in the foot in the process.
