That's right, it is ILLEGAL to do this.

Check the Homeland Security laws on this one.

Also, it is written in the merchant's account contracts that if you attempt to do this, your account will be revoked automatically.

This is one of the major sources of ID theft in the country - where when you give them your credit card, you give them your driver's license or passport as well, and in the end they make copies of both, stealing you identity. That is why it is illegal to do this.
