When the UK Royal Navy and German Navy both switched to oil (1907) because it made their battleships faster, oil became a strategic resource. At this time oil was discovered in Iraq, which at the time was part of the Ottoman empire, allies of Germany. It is highly likely that the first world war started because of the construction of the Baghdad to Constantinople railway rather than some assassination of some Archduke in Serbia.
British Troops have invaded Basra THREE times since oil was discovered: The first troops (52 divisions) deployed by the UK in WW1 were deployed to Basra. And again in WW2, and again in Gulf war 2.

British Troops have occupied Basra for something like 57 years since the discovery of oil in Iraq (roughly 100 years ago).

Why? Oil. The reason mainly is because oil is a strategic resource, the energy source for a modern mechanised army.

Interestingly for some years, the Australian Labour government (Australia has 33% of the Worlds' Uranium deposits) decided not to sell uranium. They've started selling it again now, because they figure at some stage in the future, China might just come get it.

What I'm saying here is: these wars have all been over control of strategic energy reserves. The major question here is: why aren't our governments honest about this? Are they trying to fool us, or fool people outside the west?

I think even moderate muslims probably agree with Bin Laden, who's major point is "the west is after our oil".

All this "democracy in the middle east" crap. Palestinians elected Hamas, and now we're cutting the democratically elected government off. The CIA overthrew Iran's democratic (and popular) government in 1952, and installed the Shah, who made Saddam Hussein look like a Girl Guide.
So why no honesty from government?
It's as if the government think that the people are too much pussies to take the truth. Are we?
Maybe they are right.
