The rot started before AOL came along.
Netscape (the company) fell down because they more or less did what MSFT did with IE6: rested on their laurels. They stopped any real development to Netscape 4.x, hoping that sales and their market share would be enough. Their business model didn't count on IE being released for free, and worse yet, they didn't react fast enough when IE began to outperform their browser when Netscape became synonymous with bloatware. The Mozilla project was too slow in coming and wasn't about to help their flagship browser's floundering.

The buyout by AOL infused operating capital into Netscape, but too many of the key players that got Netscape to where it had been called it a career with the company. As a result AOL--and subsequently Time Warner--were actually late to writing Netscape's eulogy. To TWAOL's credit, they DID allow the Mozilla group to establish and flourish into the realm of open source, and did help financially at its launch and subsequent growth.

Back to Symantec...who really cares? I certainly don't. NAV and worse yet, their security suite, became the poster childs for bloat. Have they finally gotten around to totally redoing their core AV engine? Or is it still stuck in 2001, as a rehash of NAV 2002?
