You have got to be kidding!
>"Our strategy is to out-innovate Microsoft. We know more about security than they ever will," Thompson said. <

What? WHAT?! He actually SAID that? You have GOT to be kidding me! I am no big fan of MS by any means but Symantec thinking they know more about security (MS included) is beyond laughable. Their programs have consistent issues with blocking everything you don't want them to block and letting evrything in that you are trying to keep out! I mean there is a lot of protection out there that is free (AVG for instance) that runs circles around anything that Symantec has. I won't deny that they may be more innovative in some areas but when it comes to security I doubt that what they know would fit in a thimble.

>"Competition with Microsoft is inevitable, given the way the tom-toms are beating at the moment," Thompson said. <

Well DUH. COmpetition with just about every company out there is inevitable but given the popularity of MS and its products that statement seens redundant.

>
"We will make sure we utilise the strength of our global brands. Symantec is synonymous with security. Microsoft is synonymous with a lot of things, but security is not one of them," he said. <

While what he said about MS is true, especially the security part for MS. I am not denying that. But Symantect being synonymous with seurity? NO FREAKIN WAY! Where Symantec is concerned switch that synonymous with infamous and you get a better picture.

>Andy Buss, an analyst at U.K.-based IT consultancy Canalys, predicted that Microsoft's planned security tools would have a fair impact on the consumer antivirus market but doubted whether businesses would adopt the products as readily. <

And I agree with that statement whole-heartedly. The MS products MAY have an impact on the antivirus market but with businesses? Who knows. Some people may trust the MS name and go with that but others may be a little leary of it and not want to try a security program that MS designed. Especially given all the issues that MS has had with its patches and other security progams. If Symantec loses business on this it won't be because MS built a better product but because Symantec has a crappy product.

>Buss added that Microsoft doesn't have a track record of providing an integrated product lineup for the whole of the enterprise, and said there was a particular gap in its tools to manage and respond to virus outbreaks. "These are areas where Microsoft's competitors can make hay," he said.<

And what he said about MS is true. They don't tend to integrate well with others. And it will allow MS competitors in the security market to pull ahead, no question about it. This is probably one of the holes that MS will not be able to dig itself out of. With all of the choices out there I don't think Symantec will be able to pull ahead though.
