I stick with external firewalls and 3rd party Internet apps.
Microsoft has consistently opened up more and more security holes with each revision of Windows. With Microsoft you never know when the next update will either improve your security, open up new holes, or kill a critical application and shutdown your business!! You just can't trust M$ anymore!!

Given M$ continual drive to extract more and more money from their users; I see no reason why M$ will change their behavior.

Meanwhile, I'll stick to using external Firewalls and/or NAT boxes, shutoff M$ updates, and avoid using any M$ user level applications which communicates over the Internet.

In nature a key aspect that prevents the spread of virus's is genetic diversity. With M$ software you have no diversity, thus your chances of infection go right through the roof.

To help protect your PC from M$ lack of diversity, one should increase the usage of of non M$ applications for all Internet related activities. I.E. Install and use applications like Firefox, Opera, Sun's Java, Open Office(for document handling), a third party email program, Media Player Classic(GNU), etc..

Security wise you'll be miles ahead of anything M$ can produce..
