Actually, few notice it's happening
That is that they don't notice that their system, most often on broadband, has been compromised. Most virus programs today aren't data killers but bandwidth stealers. They make a home PC a zombie for things like sending spam or initiating DDoS attacks. Users don't notice that they have a problem until something obvious, like their Internet home page, gets reset or their ISP shuts them off for spamming or some other TOS violation. Otherwise, they'll continue to plod onward, wondering why their system is slow from time to time and probably blame their Cable/DSL provider and Microsoft.

If you ever see one of these users' systems you'll find that they aren't a home to just one, but several forms of malware ranging from virus/worm/trojan programs to various forms of ad/spyware. Some get serious about protecting their systems after that...some might even decide to go with Linux...while others will be requesting help with a re-infected system within a couple of weeks or months.
