Death Penalty Effectiveness
Killing is not a solution nor is it an effective deterent. If that were so then murder in the U.S. would be virtually nill.

The death penalty's effectiveness has dropped - but only because it takes so damn long to execute someone. With all the appeals before someone sentenced to be executed, a convict can expect to live at least 15 - 20 years in the relative comfort of a prison while his appeals are exhausted.

Three meals a day, no need to get up and go to work. Ok, there's the occasional incident when he drops his soap in the shower... But then again, hey, turnabout is fair play.

But... I digress. Back in the day - and we're only talking about 60 or so years back - it was far more effective when you were convicted, and then taken out back and hung, shot, or even electrocuted in "little shocky" within a few weeks of your sentencing.

The reason for all these damned delays - besides making lawyers rich - comes from the touchy feely left who are overly worried about executing the wrong guy - and those who would rather NOT see anyone executed at all.

And on occasion, they do get their wish. Consider one Charles Manson. Originally sentenced to visit the gas chamber after being convicted of masterminding the Tate/Lobianco murders, his sentence was commuted to life without parole when the California's death penalty law was overturned.

He's now been dining at the state's expense for over 30 years - which, IMO, is about 29 years too long.

For what it's worth, this country's gone soft. Too much touchy feelyness going on and not enough demand for real justice.
