I din't expect that it is so easy to find and fix the various defects
``The bug hunt is part of a three-year "Open Source Hardening Project," dedicated to helping make such software as secure as possible. In January, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security awarded $1.24 million to Stanford University, Coverity and Symantec to find vulnerabilities in open-source projects.''

in OSS s/w. It must be that these haphazzard collection of losely cooperating "anarchists" can put together BETTER CODE than many of the privately developed one. Are these people more skilled overall OR is it that the "closed" code is so good at hidding its OWN defects?

Nevertgheless, I think that the US govenrment is seriously considering to employ more OSS: defects can be located and fixed more easily and FASTER.

Imagine passing windows xp or .... Vista's kernel through these tools. The defect count will most likely overwhelm these tools.... wink
