You Know...
I use Firefox as well and I do feel safer using FireFox as opposed to IE.

Now, you were wondering if there is a benefit of having program codes available to the public and how were companies able to get their software to be compatible with OS like WindowsXP.

As you may recall, for many years and to some extent is still being done now, Microsoft had kept their coding secret and only allowed certain software companies to look at their codes if those companies abided by certain agreements. Ever since Microsoft allowed part of their OS coding available to the public, the level of attacks increased.

Now, you thinking, what about Linux? Yes, Linux is an open source development, however, there are so many "flavors" of Linuxes out there that it would be difficult (not impossible) for a hacker to attack Linux based systems.

So, in a nutshell, you have the dilemma of "damned if you do, dnamed if you don't" when it comes to allowing software codes to be publically available.

I think someone else said in another post that it's one of those 'facts of life' of using computers. As long as humans are building computers and coding software, there will always going to be problems.

Regards, Richard Bretz
