got that right?

I think they already know who's boss.

Face it: most of us--and that includes most Linux geeks and most Mac mavens--are going to keep running Windows as long as software we need is only written for Windows. That's fact, whether we like it or not.

But we can take back ownership of our Windows boxes, by doing three simple things:

1. Keep our antivirus/antimalware programs up to date and run them at least weekly, making sure that between those times the realtime file checker is running.

2. Get a decent drive-imaging program and use it at least weekly. Then if some piece of badware tries to mess up your system and/or hold your files for ransom, you can just blow your Windows partition, restart, and restore your most recent drive image for that partition.

3. Keep your passwords and other personal info on a flash drive--and remove that sucker when you aren't using it.

It also helps to use your Windows box only for the things you can't do on Linux or Mac. You don't need Windows to surf the net, so don't use it to surf the net, unless Windows is all you have. If you don't have a Mac or a Linux box, get some other browser besides Internet Exploder, and use that. Mozilla, Firefox, and Opera all come to mind as excellent recommendations--and all of them are free downloads.

We don't have to be victims; it's a choice, not a law of nature. So let's get with it, people--it's time to send the hackers back to the unemployment line!
