Size isn't everything
The problem is not that XML is physically bloated (which it certainly is) but that its hierarchical structure inevitably leads either to very complex access paths to data or to logical redundancy of data (and therefore to bugs).

Also the fact that ordering has meaning in XML means that accessing data in XML inevitably means writing procedural code. This simply shouldn't be necessary for data access.

If XML were a logically coherent means of representing data then it would be worth putting in effort to solve the size and performance problems.

As XML is not logically coherent then the correct way to stem the tide of XML is to stop using XML The ideas behind XML are out of the stone age.
