Maybe we do need to redesign the Web.
An analogy (one that will get me flamed).
The current browsers are like the Dos with windows 3 stacked on top. Didn't work properly until totally rewritten as Windows NT (well until XP came out, anyway).

I agree that something new needs to be looked at. But it must be open; not able to be locked down by any vendor.
