they use Sender Policy Framework (SPF). Claiming otherwise is an
insult to the creators of this technology:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sender_Policy_Framework
SenderID is MS technology that has zero uptake in the real
world, but happens to be backward compatible with SPF v1. MS
holds patents on SenderID (caller ID portion not SPF) and their
licensing is incompatible with many open source licenses. Open
source licensed code, such as sendmail, handle the vast majority
of the worlds email traffic so MS licensing is a real problem.
Hotmail doesn't even support SenderID (i.e. v=spf2).
hotmail.com's SPF record:
"v=spf1 include:spf-a.hotmail.com include:spf-b.hotmail.com
include:spf-c.hotmail.com include:spf-d.hotmail.com ~all"
SPF is extremely simple to implement but care must be taken to
route all outgoing email via one of the identified mail servers.
This is what requires planning and some investigation.
