Your not Addressing the reality.
Look, you may be right, perhaps Microsoft is using the ?Ivory Tower? business approach to building software, but the fact still remains that it doesn?t matter weather you like it or not, that?s the way the majority of the western worlds economy runs. The public wants a product, and they don?t want to wait, and some company steps up to the plate to see if they can provide what the customer is asking for, and then we get the Ivory Tower.
The point that was formerly made by the other poster was pretty much right on the money, given the task that Microsoft is faced with they do a truly outstanding job. And your point about the Bell switches, and the tangled wires nobody understands, also well made and sure, Windows is a tangled mass of wires to be sure, and one day its going to take a complete redo to get it cleaned up.

What a lot of anti Windows/Microsoft crybabies have got to get used to is that Windows exists only because they stepped up to the plate in a very big way early on, and have continued to provide a product that the vast majority of the world are quite happy with. While there are other OS solutions out there that clean out a great deal of the internal mess that XP is, there are also fundamental reasons why those OS?s are useless for so many people, read carefully, I said useless, not bad or poorly made, just useless for their needs and wants. If Linux worked with all the software most people I know use, and didn?t seem to require command lines every time you want to do anything much beyond the mundane, or if OSX could just be dropped into any Pentium or AMD box, and actually ran games all games and other software as asked to, I would certainly recommend those, particularly Linux, over XP. Problem is, over and over and over and over again, only Microsoft is willing to seek ease of use, total plug and play compatibility, and versatility of enormously expansive software compatibility.

There is absolutely no point in explaining or making excuses for why this is the case because the excuses do not change the fact that this is the case. Its plan old facts, and until you accept the fact that XP still has something the other OS?s do not, and that something is what the public really wants, not pretty, tight coding, you are missing the issue, the problem and any hope of finding a solution.
