Thoughtful Ideas but ...
Many of you have posted some things to think about, some possible negative issues as well as some possible benefits. But the Telecom/ISP's crying about "competition" is a smoke screen. In most municipalities the local phone carrier and the local cable carrier are franchised. Meaning that in that given geographical area they HAVE no competition.

If you get a DSL/ADSL from MCI, but SBC is your "local" phone company, guess who still gets paid for the line under it all? Yep, SBC, and if you want Cable modem broadband, if Cox is your local carrier, forget about competition from Roadrunner, even if their area is a block away just across the governmental boarder line.

And we do not believe that Cox and SBC get together to set the basic rate? Interesting that in my area the cost for a Cable Broadband connection and a DSL are within a couple bucks a month. A little outside competition might make them become competative with each other as well as with a local municipality's access.

And we know that the Broadband Giants are very altruistic and playing fair with us. That is why Comcast has the ready funds to try a hostile takeover of Disney.. a few billion in the pocket they can toss around.. where do we think that came from? Do I think Comcast does not have a right to make a profit? Of course they do. But when in a given region all the service providers are "competatively priced" (read that as all within a dollar or two of each other) are they trying to tell me that the different technologies each represents to provide that service cost them the same?

Or are they required to charge the same because of government regulations? Hmm, that does bring up another thought on this issue, eh?
