Corporate Government?
I do understand the (stated) motive behind this but is it a good enough reason to allow a government entity to step over the line? Do we really want governments to be competing in the market place, possibly at the detriment of real businesses? We gasp at the very idea that government is being granted more and more policing/investigative powers concerning the internet. Is it a good idea to actually put them in charge of it? Personally I really don't think it is.

The other problem I have with it can be seen in a local town not too far from where I live. About 30 years ago they decided to build their own power generation station to supply electricity for themselves and sell off any surplus. It was billed as a win-win situation and was approved with little negative reaction from the voters, after all it promised to lower their bills.

However today it has become a mill stone around the necks of all the tax payers in the city. Fuel prices have climbed higher than anticipated and as they are a small buyer they can't get the discounts the "competition" can. The infrastructure is old and needs a complete overhaul or replacement, and as there was never an incentive to bring high powered lines into the city, they suffer blackouts on a fairly regular basis. Governments have never been known for doing a good job of maintaining their infrastructure (look at your local roads and highways) or staying current with new technologies. There isn't any need or incentive as they are the only game in town. I would hate to see that same thing happen with broadband connectivity.
