Home Depot Network rant
Sorry to get off on a rant here...

I work for a state level gov enity in GA. We have always had a Home Depot shop mentality. It has saved the tax payers really money to have us learn how to support ourselves instead of relying on contractors.

Often times the collective buying power of government is under utilized because less than understanding bureaucrats circum to the fears that sales teams present them. If more government entities invested more in training their staffs and less on buying what corporations are selling we would all have cheaper government.

How many years ago was it that setting up LANs was a major under taking that required vast teams of "outside consultants" to configure. Now it is just another simple commodity that a person or two can handle in-house. Setting up and configuring WANs or MANs is now becoming a commodity. Even splicing fiber has become as simple as making a twisted pair patch cable.

I am sure that telco companies are worried but the taxpayers deserve to have their money spent wisely. If all of the different county agencies jumped on this backbone and shared the cost from their perspective budgets then the taxpayers would see a real return on investment and a government run more like a business.
