RE: mdsmedia
"Hey I'm making the effort, so don't go calling me a fanboy. I chose Linux for a lot of reasons. Security probably wasn't even one of them. But I feel a hell of a lot more secure in Linux than in Windows."

Good for you. And I would agree that when running linux on the desktop you should feel more secure. But the reason you are more secure has little to do with the design of linux. That's all I'm saying.

I still maintain that running Windows as a LU is not THAT hard. Fixing programs that break without admin permissions is almost allways fixed by simple ACL changes. Two utilities, filemon and regmon by sysinternals can be used to find out what programs are trying to access.

Here is a list of programs I run in Windows that required modifcations:

WinAMP 5.x (stores settings in program files directory) - the lastest version of WinAMP actually supports running as a LU by default happy

Plextools Pro - app that came with my CD Burner - stores settings in a registry key only writable by admins. Also, like all CD writing apps, requires access to harwdare. Fixed by modifying ACL on a registry key and installing Nero Burnrights

Hauppage TV Utilities (multiple porograms) - all of them require access to one reg key. All fixed by modifying ACL on that ONE key.

My little WinSUDO hack is for people like you who either don't have the knowledge or WILL to fix programs. It's also usefull for programs that should not be run as regular users no matter what - like installers or system utilities (defrag). I actually rarely use it myself. Hopefully I can get around to rewriting it so it isn't so kludgy.
